PONGAL release of the Tamil movie  NANBAN, meaning ‘friend’ in Tamil, is the official  Tamil re-make of THREE IDIOTS in Hindi and the basic story lifted from the book ‘FIVE POINT SOMEONE‘, by Chetan Bhaghat.

I watched the movie this evening in Prarthana open air theatre on the East Coast Road at Chennai. To put it succinctly, the movie was FLAT & has nothing Tamil about it. It was like watching the DISCOVERY TV Channel in Tamil, the content had nothing reflecting Tamil culture with dialogues in chaste translated Tamil. It was FLAT. I think the initial hype is likely to wear out real fast and i am sure, the movie is not likely to do well in small towns and villages of Tamil Nadu. The movie is an ‘engineer’ based version of the Tamil movie VASOOL RAJA (which was a remake of MUNNA BHAI M B B S). in which the lead actors were students of a Medical college.

VASOOL RAJA at least had Tamil flavour, with Kamal Haasan and Sneha rendering their respective roles with much elan, even though it was also a remake of the Hindi movie MUNNA BHAI M B B S. The quintessence of MUNNA BHAI was recaptured in true Tamil sense, especially with Kamal Haasan playing a sterling role of  the MEDICAL student, who is not doing Medicine on merit, but just to spite the  Dean/ Principal of the Medical College and also bring in his home-grown beliefs into Allopathy.

NANBAN is the same story happening in an Engineering college. The three actors seem to have striven hard to match up to their Hindi counterparts, but fall FLAT. Shankar’s touch is lacking in this movie, i wonder why he couldn’t absorb the essence of the Hindi movie and transmute it into a Tamil movie of some calibre. He appears to have lost himself in having got into the details with a view towards being faithful to the original, in the process Tamil flavour is wanting.

I hope Shankar sheds doing such movies and truly brings out the linguistic punch and the cultural flavours of Tamil. Good luck to him for his next movie.

I recently saw a song sequence in the Thamizh Movie VETTAIKARAN with Vijay in the lead. The title of the song is EN UCHCHI MANDAIYILE and for those who are eager to watch the song sequence the link to the song in YOUTUBE is given here:-

Watch the following link to see the playback singers of the same song sing it at the request of the compere:-

The female singer is Charulatha Mani and the male singer is Krishna Iyer. The song is AMAZING.

There is a line at 1:05 minutes at the first link, and at 2:40 in the second link and the words are “DHAWANI THAANDI PARTHAVANAY”- the literal translation of that into English would be : THE PERSON WHO SAW ACROSS (BEYOND) MY HALF-SAREE (*that wraps me from my hip frontally, bottoms and breasts) over the FULL SKIRT!” This is no CHOLI KE PEECHAY KYA HAI. It is the HOOK, LINE and SINKER stuff.

I had not seen the song sequence first, but had heard it first. Since i liked the song and was salaciously shocked at the words DHAWANI THAANDI PARTHAVANAY, i SAW the song in a video. I was hoping to see an apt expression to match the words which were sung by the heroine at that specific point. Alas! it was all glossed over and OVER-SANITIZED.

Then searched the whole internet to get to the female play-back singer sing that line. Which is the second link and appearing at 2:40 mins. Watch again plzzzz. The female singer Charulatha Mani has sanitized the song to such an extent with her forward bend and a genial smile.

From what i heard and had IMAGINED the song to be- in presentation there has been a total SANITIZATION of the words DHAWANI THAANDI PARTHAVANAY!

Maybe, there would be such glib talkers who would have convinced the singer by giving the words the meaning: SKIRT IS WORN BY GIRLS AND WHEN SHE SAYS THOSE WORDS SHE MEANS THAT HE HAD SEEN HER FROM GIRLHOOD TO WOMANHOOD!! MAYBE………..Maybe, ONE WHO SAW BEYOND THE PHYSICAL…….. maybe!!

MOVIES, as an AUDIO VISUAL presentation, could be CONFLICTING. With multi-cultured censor board members wielding the scissors copiously, this is probably the only way to sneak in some SMUT, to cater to the groundlings like me- ha ha ha.

By the way, in Thamizh Nadu and in Thamizh cinema, i thought, music had come to a freeze with Rahman, but i should say VIJAY ANTONY has scored music to this song quite ejaculatorily!!
