The Blanket!

There was this debate between colleagues, as to whether liquor or smoke was more addictive. Naturally, the participants were reduced to those who at some time had been using tobacco or liquor or both. Even though, it is only a person who had both been a smoker and a drinker who should be qualified to participate in the debate.

One may ask me, why should a debater have a first hand experience to have an opinion? Very true, one need not have to have  first hand experience to hold an opinion, nevertheless the AUTHENTICITY of an experience is what adds weight to an opinion in a debate of these pardonable socially accepted vices.

Let me advert to one of the myths which may exemplify my point. Once the Roman Chief God and his consort got into a debate as to who enjoyed most during sex. So neither Jupiter nor Juno were able to decide, as they both have had only a one sided experience. So the person chosen to deliver a verdict on this was TIRESIAS. So who was this TIRESIAS? He was a person who had led an adult life both as a man as well as a woman. So he was called upon and he opined that a woman enjoyed more than a man during sex. Well Juno did not like the verdict and had issues with this verdict and inflicted blindness on Tiresias. Thus, we already have a mythical example which shows that unless a person has had an experience at both ends, his opinion  would not carry much weight. And i give weight to an opinion based on experience.

My friend, who was both a social drinker and also a pack smoker butted in and said, “I think i am the best suited among you all as I have not merely seen both the sides but have a fresh memory of  the ongoing addictions. He went on to narrate an anecdote from his repertoire, ” Once when a lady saw Mr. Winston Churchill drunk and sprawled on the floor said MR. CHURCHILL YOU ARE DRUNK, HORRIBLY DRUNK, the repartee from Mr. Winston Churchill was, MA’AM I WILL BE SOBER TOMORROW, BUT YOU ARE UGLY.” So by narrating this anecdote he gave an indication that sobriety returned the next day and the urge to return to the intoxicating drink  may not happen till one finds the right crowd and ambiance.

He also said that Nicotine addiction was more permanent as once the nicotine content dipped below a certain level in his blood there was an unquenchable urge to smoke, whereas when it came to drink it was the outer surroundings which impelled him to resort to drinks.  So he went on to narrate a nice little story of dubious veracity, which to my ears, settled the debate in favour of smoking as the more addictive of the two:

Once Ben and Dan went on a trekking and Ben, being the more enthusiastic of the two, ran up a hundred yards ahead of Dan.  They both sighted a black blanket on the other side of a brook, Ben crossed over and as seen from the perspective of Dan, Ben had wrapped himself around with the thick wooly blanket and was standing frozen on the other side of the brook. Dan stood still, and saw not much motion in Ben and shouted, ” BEN, LEAVE THE F**KING BLANKET COME BACK TO THIS SIDE.” Ben replied, “I HAVE LEFT IT, BUT THE BEAR IS NOT LEAVING ME.” It was a bear-hug! And not a BLANKET as was assumed by Ben. SO my friend went on to say, “As kids we take a few drags thinking cigarettes are EMOTIONAL blankets, but it is only as one gets older that one realizes that smoking is no BLANKET, but A BEAR-HUG THAT REFUSES TO LEAVE!”

But coming back to our TIRESIAS, when my professor in college Prof. Eugene D’Vaz was asked by me as to whether Tiresias was first a man and then a woman or the other way round, could not give me a convincing answer, except for his explanation that it would be easier to presume that in those mythical days- when surgery had not enabled men to append organs- it must HAVE been that Tiresias was a man first and then became a woman.

TILL DATE I BELIEVE THAT TIRESIAS  REMEMBERED MORE HIS RECENT STATUS, THAN HIS LOST PAST AND THEREFORE THE OPINION WAS BIASED BASED ON TIME LAG!

SMOKING IN MOVIES- DELHI H C

Judging issues based on PRINCIPLED DECISION MAKING is the ULTIMATE in Democracy. Otherwise in a country of 1.2 billion population, it becomes the opinion of the Judge of the day, which is not applauded but carried forward grudgingly as a dubious precedent.

Justice Kaul of the High Court of Delhi has decided the issue of SMOKING ON FILMS on PRINCIPLES, that it has put the bogus pioneers of such causes in a quandary.

We all know that a MINISTER’s position in the Indian polity is two-fold:

to promote legislation of the policies of the Government &

to be answerable to the Parliament collectively with the cabinet and also w.r.t his ministry.

But some Ministers ( servers), instead of serving the public have hijacked their office to include prescriptions that are not commanded in law. To make matters worse they had even been emboldened to RESTRAIN people from doing things that are /cannot be proscribed by law.

One of those ministers who instead of taking up basic public health issues that haunt this country had hijacked the ministry in trivial issues like who would be the In-Charge of AIIMS?, whether people could smoke in public/ restaurants? etc. The statistics show that the state of the country in Public Health is appallingly bad. Even when the Prime Minister wants a by-pass surgery, he uses AIIMS for security reasons and not the medical skills that the Institution  brings! The WHO report would bear me out in this regard that the amount spent in India for Health is 1% of her GDP and much below the 5% norm.

HE SAW SMOKING AS THE GREATEST IMPEDIMENT IN THE HEALTH OF THE NATION. He even aided in the issue of putting up statutory warnings, on movies/TVs, when a scene of smoking came up in a film!!

We respect Mahatma Gandhi because each Indian knows that he was one person who attempted at every level to follow what he preached. Had he merely prescribed things without following those prescriptions, we would not have had time for him. In India there are many who prescribe without practicing what they prescribe.

The prescriber of such non-smoking was the same who in his earlier avatar, along with his supporters was RESPONSIBLE FOR FELLING TREES (a crime under the FOREST ACT), blocking vehicular traffic (besides restricting the rights of individual citizen is also a crime under the IPC) and CREATING NUISANCE TO THE PUBLIC in the name of caste politics. He alongwith his father has the least right to spearhead smokeless India. He had trampled on the LIBERTIES OF INDIANS FOR GARNERING AND COAGULATING THE SCUM OF HIS SUPPORTERS!

IT IS TO BE MENTIONED THAT THE HIGH COURT OF DELHI HAS DECIDED AND STATED THAT PREVENTING THE DIRECTORS OF MOVIES TO SHOW SMOKING SCENES WAS VIOLATIVE OF ARTICLE 19(1) OF THE CONSTITUTION OF INDIA. THE COURT HAS FURTHER OBSERVED THAT THE DIRECTOR’S CREATIVITY CANNOT BE THUS RESTRAINED. THANKS TO MAHESH BHATT- ONE MORE INDIAN WITH BALLS.

THE MINISTER IF TAKEN TO THE OLYMPICS AND MADE TO WATCH THE 110 MTS HURDLES, WOULD TELL HIS GOONS TO REMOVE ALL THE HURDLES SO THAT ALL THE HURDLERS COULD RUN SMOOTHLY WITHOUT ANY IMPEDIMENT. HIS UNDERSTANDING IS SHALLOW AND HIS ZEAL MISPLACED. IT IS TIME HE WAS TAUGHT THE BASICS OF LIFE!

IT IS TIME THAT SOME MORONS UNDERSTOOD THAT THE SOCIETY HAS MANY UNDESIRABLE THINGS LIKE CIGARETTES, BEEDIS, SNUFF, CHEWING TOBACCO, ETC WHICH CANNOT BE GOVERNMENTALLY BANNED AS THEY WOULD RESURFACE IN UNPALATABLE FORMS AND BECOME MORE DELETERIOUS TO THE SOCIETY.

SMOKING POLICY!

Hi Liberals, Die-hards & the “MEAN”minded,

Whatever hue yr conviction might be of, it is time to take note of the MAJORITARIANISM which is eating into the tolerance quotient of the liberals of this great country- i.e INDIA.

Smoking is gonna affect not only the smoker, but also those who are exposed to the stream of the exhaled smoke. Point taken and as a matter of defending their rights, in public places the smokers ought not to smoke.

Is my fully window wound-up car a public place or a private place, while on the road?

It is a tricky question. If u say it is private, then why have a rule that penalizes the smoking driver in DELHI? Further why absolve the passenger who smokes, with all the windows wound-down?

or are we to conclude that the only way to discipline the drivers- who have gone out of the control of the owners- is to expose them to the police force? Maybe yes. Nobody cares for the drivers (an INDIAN driver) or his right to smoke, as it helps him to beat the sleep and drowsiness which creeps on him, as mostly his bosses keep him waiting without reason and his female bosses expect him to run and open the back left door for them to step out languorously!!

IT IS A CLASS LEGISLATION (or A CLASS SUB-ORDINATE LEGISLATION).

The driver becomes stealthy and instead of holding his ciggy between his index and middle fingers, starts holding it inverted between the thumb and index! Guilt has already been spread by the society on his consciousness.

THERE is a saying in TAMIL (the only thriving classical language of India)- which says that a dog after biting the goat with impunity, bites the bull/cow/ox and then the dog is emboldened to bite MAN.

We make laws and rules without testing if the rules, when at the stage of conception itself, trench on the individual rights. Later, the rules are extended to squelch the bleating dying sounds of the liberals.

No doubt, CIGARETTE SMOKING MAY BE INJURIOUS, but who gives us the right to take away the man’s right to indulge in an injurious act esp. if his act harms none?

The minister who is spear-heading this move hails from a party that had FELLED TREES TO PREVENT TRAFFIC ON THE STATE AND NATIONAL HIGHWAYS! Now they become champions of causes, when backwardness and ignorance are inundating their party cadres!! The minister and his dad shud do something about the pathetic condition of his supporters, instead of instigating legislation curbing the liberties of INDIANS- all in the disguise of HEALTH!!

The APEX court shud decide cases on LEGAL PRINCIPLES and not based on POLICY. Unfortunately, the SC was in no mood to look into the rights of the smokers affected. It was unwilling to be reasonable and require the executive to clearly demarcate the PUBLIC PLACE from PRIVATE SPACE. It has allowed itself to be convinced by the laudable policy of RESTRAINING SMOKING, all at the cost of an INDIAN’S RIGHT TO BE WRONG- WHEN HE HURTS NONE!

MAJORITARIANISM is the malaise that plagues large societies, where composite culture and practices are slowly eliminated and the human spirit is STUNTED thru restrictive rules and legislation. May the INDIAN liberal rise and voice his opinion against it!!
