SLUTWALK!

A new protest movement sparked by a policeman’s ill-judged advice to women students to “avoid dressing like sluts” has taken root in the US and Canada.

Police Constable Michael Sanguinetti had been giving a talk on health and safety to a group of students at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto when he made the now infamous remarks.

You know, I think we’re beating around the bush here,” he reportedly told them. “I’ve been told I’m not supposed to say this – however, women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimised.

He has since apologised for his remarks and has been disciplined by the Toronto police, but remains on duty.

How a woman is dressed or didn’t, should NOT be of any concern to a Police officer, unless the dress or the state of undress of a female is the subject of the Penal Laws of the place where he is executing the powers as a police officer. Michael Sanguinetti was addressing a group of students on HEALTH and SAFETY. Sanguinetti is no advisor, he was a police officer who had been given the opportunity to talk on HEALTH and SAFETY measures for, probably women students. Yet he went beyond his brief and let loose an ‘advisory’ which was uncalled for and aggravated his statement with the use of a word which , i think is , quite incompatible with the audience he was addressing.

Now that his “advisory” had snowballed into a global issue, it is hardly human not to voice my opinion in a private domain like this blog.

Now how RAPE has been brought into these discussions is still a mystery. Sanguinetti is not specifically quoted as saying that women should avoid dressing like sluts to avoid RAPE. But most of the local papers have been saying that TO AVOID BEING RAPED WOMEN SHOULD NOT DRESS UP LIKE SLUTS. I personally think, WOMEN cannot be sluts by their DRESS but by their BEHAVIOUR.

I have seen the way some women to get their way, would use their feminine charm in an overt physical sense, with men. It is not the “smile”, but the “way a woman smiles”: it is not the way a woman is dressed, but the way she chooses to use her dress, which defines a SLUT. To rechristen the word “SLUT” with a more positive meaning may be the goal of some women’s organizations. But the word SLUT did not come into usage, just because MEN invented a word to demean women. The word “SLUT” means something which could be sensed. For example WHORISHNESS exhibited  by a woman does not necessarily make her a WHORE. But it is the body language exhibited, by a woman at a particular point bartering a sexual favour for something, which is WHORISH! So generations of people using the English language have noticed SLUTTISH behaviour and smirked on the sidelines. So when the word SLUT is used to signify a particular behaviour, it is APT.

Probably WOMEN’s organization want to “include” such sluttish behavior under the normal behaviour head. SO be it. Let them try…. after all i too believe in the FREEDOM OF SPEECH and EXPRESSION.

But to posit a positive meaning to the word SLUT, is just going to drive the word into usage between close friends and groups. In which case, SANGUINETTI’s use was more an INAPPROPRIATE use of the word SLUT before a group, which sympathized with WOMEN who had no other skill other than this GENDER SPECIFIC SKILL!

But if Sanguinetti had prescribed a prophylaxis to the women to be MODESTLY dressed to AVOID BEING RAPED, then i put him the class of St. Paul, who made his own little concoctions and prescribed them as GOD GIVEN PRINCIPLES to WOMAN. The church is still reeling under St. Paul’s  prescriptions like I DO NOT GIVE ANY WOMAN THE AUTHORITY  TO SPEAK IN THE CHURCH; SUBMIT YOURSELVES TO YOUR ‘OWN’ HUSBANDS;  WIDOWS DO NOT REMARRY BUT SPEND YOUR TIME IN SOBRIETY AND PRAYER etc. etc..

Now that Sanguinetti has apologized, let us be gracious and let go of him. Maybe, he still holds the same opinion, but let him not voice it in inappropriate fora.

I AM SANGUINE that IT IS BETTER NOT TO EXCEED ONE’S BRIEF!

The TOLL LOOT!

My father, my grand father have surely paid for the National Highways by paying their taxes. Thus many National Highways were expanded, maintained and some new ones constructed out of their taxes! To LOOT the third generation for maintaining these OLD HIGHWAYS, is usurious.

When one traverses three segments of National Highways connecting Bangalore to Chennai, which are NH 46, NH 84 and NH 7, one feels that these Highways were infrastructure built through generations of activity. Activity of Indians paying their taxes, the Government acquiring land to expand those Highways and maintaining them out of these revenue receipts.

But somewhere along the line, we INDIANS are taken for a ride. The three NHs of 7, 46 and 84 consisting of around 280 Kilometres are divided between toll operators who are located at Krishnagiri, outskirts of Vaniyambadi, outskirts of Vellore, near Wallajahpet and finally at Sriperumbudur. These are the TOLL joints as one travels from Bangalore to Chennai. From Hosur to Krishnagiri is NH 7, then from Krishnagiri to outskirts of Ranipettai (near the Wallajapet toll) is NH46 and the last stretch from Wallajahpet to Chennai (Vanagaram) is NH 84.

These 280kms have been split up between these 5 toll operators. These Highways were built, rather renovated, on a BOT basis. They were to collect the toll upon completion of renovation and recover their cost.

From the 6th or 7th of June 2011, the rates of two tolls have been revised from Rs. 25 to Rs 60 and the other from Rs 35 to Rs 60. Each of these tolls collect tolls for usage of around 50 Kms. Which means per KM cost of using these tolls are Rs 1.20 per KM. Motorbikes, autorickshaws and ambulances are exempted. Which means only passenger cars, trucks, LCVs and other Heavy vehicles are tolled!

These roads were NOT acquired recently, they were existing roads which were through a bidding process allotted for laying and collection of tolls. These collections are not necessarily done by the companies which LAID THE ROADS. These companies which laid the roads have probably exited after selling their stake to another company, working out the REVENUE generatable from toll operations in the remainder of the years. This sudden revision of the toll rates took me by surprise. When asked, who were the toll operators one of the persons manning the Krishnagiri Toll said that RELIANCE Industries were operating the toll.

I see that these NATIONAL HIGHWAYS for which lands were acquired way back in the 50’s and 60’s are being handed over to these cash rich, well connected companies and allowed to LOOT from the helpless travelers. On the one hand it is the avowed policy of all the parties in power, therefore the Government of India, to create infrastructure facilities for free interaction and exchange of goods. Yet this LOOTING of passengers, who travel by cars is PREPOSTEROUS.

My fore fathers paid for the roads and now I pay for these fat cat companies, in the guise of maintenance! And these are limited to the NH in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat and Maharashtra where the traffic is enormous because of manufacturing and other trading activities. Whereas even though there are similar roads in other parts of the country they do not generate this level of income.

By usage of my car if the roads are eroded to the extent of Rs1.20 per KM, then the justification should be transparantly explained by mentioning the toll collections for the year, maintenance charges, salaries and other expenses and the profits made from these operations. Further, as these companies are prone to inflating their expenses on BOOKS and thereby showing REDUCED profits, their books should be audited by the CAG, as these are toll collectors who are stepping in to do the functions of the Government.

Sure PPP is an instrument of growth, but using that as a means to EXPLOIT succeeding generations is DESPICABLE to say the least! I hope the government would be rational in their toll collection in high activity states like Tamil Nadu and not use these for netting off the losses incurred in toll operations in sluggish, uneducated and feudal states of India.

It has been recently reported in the papers that in NH47 between Aroor and Edappally near Cochin-Ernakulam, there was a toll collection of Rs5, which was revised to Rs 15/-. The locals went to the toll plaza and got it vandalized.

Another instance is the Bangalore International Airport Ltd., who have taken objection to NH7 collecting toll from the taxi operators.

There is a Private Limited company called MEPL, who collect @ 45% of all toll collected in this country. Any effort to find out the persons behind this Private Limited Company from the Indian websites is in vain. One has to rely on REUTERS for dope on their activities. One can access this from the following link:

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/05/20/markets-ratings-meptollraods-idUSWNA907320110520

Such is our transparency. The article is posted by me as a comment to this blog! As it is not uncommon for such articles to disappear, when found inconvenient by the Pvt. Ltd Company!

Finally, toll collected is a FEE and not a TAX. Only to the extent that the users have enjoyed “COLLECTIVELY” that the FEE is to be charged. But there seems to be an UNDUE HASTE by the Government to PULL OUT MONEY from the road users more like a TAX than as a FEE!

GOD HELP INDIA!

POWER & TRUTH- NIETZSCHE!

All things are subject to interpretation whichever interpretation prevails at a given time is a function of power and not truth.
Friedrich Nietzsche
If we ever get to understand this statement of Nietzsche, we would be able to understand the FUNCTION of the Courts.

Let us look at it this way, in the USA the Supreme Court judges are known by their party affiliations, which are well known. So if the bench consists of more Democrats than Republican, their judgments , observed from the point of view of their affiliations would, engender a DEMOCRATIC bent.

If we analyze their “reasoning”, it may sound extremely logical, reasonable and fair.  Are these logicality, reasonableness and fairness, which have been the bed rock of  their “reasoning”, merely the hidden TOOLS in the hands of the “POWERFUL”?

MAY BE NIETZSCHE is, was and will be RIGHT ALWAYS!

Elephants and PETA!

Karnataka as a State of India has become a home to animals (both wild and domesticated) goring men, women and children. The recent instance of three wild elephants entering the city of Mysore and killing a security guard of an ATM, is the latest one which has got my goat.

I hate people who ooze with sympathy towards wild as well as   domesticated animals which harm, threaten and sometimes bite or gore humans. These persons  sympathize with the animals, on the grounds that they do not understand what they are doing!. Well, may be these animals do not know what they are doing, but we in the society know the consequences of these animals not knowing what they are doing- and therefore we have to empower the common man in the art of self defence.

A few weeks back in National Games Village in Bangalore,  a small boy of  around 7 years was surrounded by a pack of stray dogs. The boy was so terrified that he was howling and calling out to his mother who was probably in the 3rd or 4th floor of the nearby block. I could hear her telling her son to stay still, till she came.

The way the boy howled still reverberates in my ears. I took the lift down to take my car and ram those stray dogs, which had been fed and raised by those good Samaritans who claim to be “kind” towards animals. By the time i reached, the boy ‘s mother had reached and i saw her walking her son, with him turning again and again and looking at the following pack ,with eyes drying but still sobbing  with convulsions to his breath.

I cannot forget the sight. I drove the car chasing the pack, which was still following the mom and son.

In the Mysore incident, some morons have been talking endlessly that the elephants had come from as far as 40kms, etc etc.. So who should care for those “histories” of the creatures, which have killed humans and destroyed properties. NOT ME AT LEAST.

What the hell were the police doing? They all are equpped with .303 rifles and two shots on the head of those rogue elephants would have killed them. That is the least preventive action which should have been taken, as the elephants had already left proof of their peaceless trail. But they waited for some forest officials to come to the spot and fire , quite ineffectually, 3 tranquilizer shots. I could see the needles sticking like hypodermic insulin injections. The elephants naturally could not be brought down.

Why are we making our citizens GUILTY?

I am sure there must have been many who could have brought down the rogues with their licensed guns, yet none dared to kill the elephants. They must have been worried about consequences of shooting down 3 elephants. There are umpteen Acts like The Wild Life Act which would make them culpable! Then those daily visits to police stations, courts, appeals and finally a term in jail too- to boot!

So we have made a generation of GUILTY Indians, with all our wrongly placed sympathy and legislations.

The LAW grants immunity to individuals, even for murder, committed in SELF DEFENCE. But here in India, the question which would be asked is, “DID THE ANIMAL COME MENACINGLY TOWARDS YOU?” and if not the Police would still register a case and take it to trial. They mighty even suspect that he killed the elephant for their tusks!

There have been instances where stray dogs have killed children in Bangalore. I remember a picture where a stray bull had cornered a lady and she was standing petrified behind a cycle, trying to get help from the public in the meanwhile.

WHY SHOULD HUMANS BE VICTIMS OF THESE STRAY AND WILD CREATURES? AND WHY SHOULD THE PEOPLE FOR ETHICAL TREATMENT OF ANIMALS BE FALSELY SYMPATHETIC TOWARDS SUCH CREATURES?

All this is because we have no sense of BALANCE. If one goes to the wild and kills an animal, the person who killed the animal has to prove that he had done it in self defence, but in a public place within the city, there is no such need. Any animal which threatens or harms a human could be killed, if there is no other way of controlling the animal.

If killing foxes and minks for their fur is inhuman, so is watching helplessly with a gun in hand- when a stray or wild animal is on a rampage in cities, towns and villages killing humans and damaging properties.

WHAT THE HECK WERE THE POLICE DOING ALL THOSE 3 HOURS?

Let us dump all this PETA stuff and make our citizens commonsensical. First HUMAN LIVES, THEN THE ANIMALS.

“If a madman were to come into this room with a stick in his hand, no doubt we should pity the state of his mind; but our primary consideration would be to take care of ourselves. We should knock him down first, and pity him afterwards.” Dr. Samuel Johnson

I hope all those PETA sympathizers would stop inflicting guilt in the minds of our people, especially when it is in self defence.

Tailor & his Mistress!

The sooner you sew, the more your experience!

Well, that was what was taught to the Tailor in his sewing school. The statement may have metaphysical dimensions, yet as a person endowed with modest brains, he was smug interpreting THE SOONER YOU SEW, THE MORE YOUR EXPERIENCE as a dictum where “experience” was a desirable achievement in itself.

The Metaphysics that the faster  one does a repetitive work, the more time one GAINS to continue with the repetitive work makes a person more EXPERIENCED. SO, when two persons of similar age meet MAN is judged by the amount of WORK ACCOMPLISHED, and NOTHING ELSE. The more experienced GAINS in RANK. That gives MORE TIME FOR THE MORE EXPERIENCED to CLIMB.

THE tailor’s greatest weapon is that he could gain INTIMACY of the Body with the female client without having got MENTALLY intimate. She takes his orders. Some take his soft instructions given by his fingers on her back. She submits herself like an intelligent and obedient student. This tailor  was that, but he had packed more experience an hour than all his peers. A hall-mark of skill and energy.

Nothing excites a woman more than an enterprising and energetic man. His enterprising nature could finance her prodigality; and his energy would create imaginative games on bed and keep her mentally snug. A typical woman like this she was. But she was a lil too shy, the type of shyness which is relatable to PRIDE than genuine BASHFULNESS! Once a friend of hers had said that this Veteran tailor stitched the best and it was a delight to visit him. She decided- to visit him. She drove up to a textile shop, got herself a Saree and a matching blouse material and entered the tailor’s shop. The tailor was around 34 years of age with a mustache neatly trimmed  below the nose but becoming a twirlable bush at both the ends of the mouth. He had a curious control over his upper lip which betrayed “formality” yet a lascivious mischief betrayed by the succulent lower lip which was freshly moisturized by his intermittent smack.

She liked him. She was looking forward to his moves. He  said, “So Miss…………… what kept  such a beautiful woman away from my shop for so many years?”

“Ms. Reema……….”  she said.

YES MISS REEMA WHAT KEPT SUCH A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN AWAY FROM MY SHOP FOR SO MANY YEARS?

Before she could recover from her blush the second salvo was fired by the tailor. He said. “I WOULD BE DIVINELY BLESSED IF I COULD DRAPE YOU AND ALLOW TO ADOPT YOU AS MY INSPIRING ANGEL. “

She felt an urge which came out as, “……I have brought some blouse material for stitching.”

“Stitching is the job of an apprentice, but i FIT you with LOOKS.” said the tailor.

Reema was floored. She was remembering Pygmalion. A person who was going to breathe a new vision into her life.

She found herself walking into a room for which our tailor opened  the door. It was spacious, he made her stand on a wooden patch and took her hand and raised them like a dance master teaching his pupil. Now that the hands were raised shoulder high, she felt partially exposed to his mischievous view, however she steadied herself apprehending that her “giving in” too quickly should not slake his Curiosity, if not his appetite.

He went right behind her as if to hug her, slung his measuring tape over her breasts and caught the end of the tape deftly with his left hand. There was something elegant about people using their left hand to do things. It is so “charming” she thought. Yet in that flicker of a second, she felt a hard press of a swollen male crotch gently grazing  her frotteuristic fold and then go back when he caught that end of the tape. She was giving the tailor the benefit of doubt- and called it a “functional accident”- an undesirable thing happening during the course of one’s DUTIES. But that split second SENSATION was still lingering in her mind. “was he hard for me or is he a priapus? >………..” so she was cogitating.

The tailor asked, : Miss Reema, do you want the blouse to be FASHIONABLE?

WHAT IS FASHIONABLE?

“SEE MISS REEMA, IF I TAKE YOUR  CUP SIZE, MEASURE YOUR GIRTH AND SHOW YOU SOME CATALOGUE AND ASK FOR YOUR CHOICE OF DESIGN, THAT IS TAILORING. BUT IF YOU LET ME FEEL YOU AND ENVISAGE YOU IN THE BEST POSSIBLE FORM, THEN I MAY DRESS YOU UP IN A WAY THAT YOU WOULD REMAIN A FAIRY ANGEL TO ME. An ANGEL- as you inspired me; and a FAIRY as you would be my  CREATION of my SENSATION.

I WANT TO BE FASHIONABLE………Reema blurted out.

FEMALE WRITERS & V.S. NAIPAUL!

The Guardian reports :

In an interview at the Royal Geographic Society on Tuesday about his career, Naipaul, who has been described as the “greatest living writer of English prose”, was asked if he considered any woman writer his literary match. He replied: “I don’t think so.” Of [Jane] Austen he said he “couldn’t possibly share her sentimental ambitions, her sentimental sense of the world”.

He felt that women writers were “quite different”. He said: “I read a piece of writing and within a paragraph or two I know whether it is by a woman or not. I think [it is] unequal to me.”

The author, who was born in Trinidad, said this was because of women’s “sentimentality, the narrow view of the world”. “And inevitably for a woman, she is not a complete master of a house, so that comes over in her writing too,” he said.

The Newspapers in India have converted the statements made in the interview as a gender slight heaped on WOMEN, and therefore many Indian Women writers , whom i do not intend to dignify by naming them in my blog, have HAVE RISEN IN REVOLT AND SAID  that:

“NAIPAUL’S COMMENTS REEK OF GENDER BIAS. THESE ARE COMMENTS OF AN EGOMANIAC. I DO NOT THINK ALL WOMEN WRITERS HAVE A SENTIMENTAL VIEW OF THE WORLD. TONI MORRISON AND DORIS LESSING ARE BOTH NOBEL PRIZE WINNERS. THEY ARE NOT SENTIMENTAL. IN FACT THEY ARE BRUTAL. YOU CANNOT DEFINE WRITING BY GENDER.”

IT IS A REFLECTION OF INSECURITY. IT IS A BIT OF POSTURING, TOO, IN A WAY ATTRACTING PUBLICITY. SAYING THAT WOMEN HAVE A NARROW VIEW OF THE WORLD IS PREPOSTEROUS. WRITING CANNOT BE JUDGED BY GENDER.

Do they know what they are talking about? I guess not. They are mixing the artificially enforced Social Values on to the FREE AND BELLIGERENT HUMAN SOUL (which is so essential to a writer). Do they know that DORIS LESSING left behind her children with their father in South Africa,  for London to pursue her carreer and famously said :

“There is nothing more boring for an intelligent woman than to spend endless amounts of time with small children….”

Secondly, TONI MORRISON had said something very poignant about her own writing:

it’s off-putting to some readers, who may feel that I’m involved in writing some kind of feminist tract. I don’t subscribe to patriarchy, and I don’t think it should be substituted with matriarchy. I think it’s a question of equitable access, and opening doors to all sorts of things.”

The women writers quoted by the Indian Women writers had a soul which transcended gender issues. They went beyond the “sentimentality” which envelops a female mind. For example, out of the 107 Nobel Laureates in Literature, there have been 12 women. Which translates to less than 12% of the total Nobel Laureates, I do not think this skewed up AWARD of the NOBEL PRIZE should be ascribed to gender bias.

1909 – Selma Lagerlöf
1926 – Grazia Deledda
1928 – Sigrid Undset
1938 – Pearl Buck
1945 – Gabriela Mistral
1966 – Nelly Sachs
1991 – Nadine Gordimer
1993 – Toni Morrison
1996 – Wislawa Szymborska
2004 – Elfriede Jelinek
2007 – Doris Lessing
2009 – Herta Müller

I do not for a moment say that all the prizes given to Male Laureates are justifiable, especially with Winston Churchill and Rudyard Kipling having made the grade. Yet, at least obliquely, these Men had stood for something which is relatable to the “SOUL” and not mere “SENTIMENTALITY”! It is a pity that Kipling should find a place along with Ernest Hemingway, Albert Camus and Jeal Paul Sartre, yet these have been aberrations  decided more on the scope of the nominees who were pitted for that year. It was to be decided if Thomas Hardy (an inveterate pessimist) was to be awarded the Prize or a more positive out-looked person was to be chosen!

In any case, i agree with V S NAIPAUL’s observations, and it should not be sieved with a fine net of “ARTIFICIALLY CREATED EQUALITY OF THE SOCIETY!”

Anyway good luck to our women writers. I hope they get BRUTAL (Doris Lessing’s observations….) in their perception and writing instead of  laying it on with maternal and nubile instincts.
