MOTHER TONGUE!

A friend of mine asked me what was the meaning of Mother Tongue? As usual i did a search  of my RAM and arrived at the explanation : the first language which a child  is introduced to,  thru his/her mother, mostly.

Coolz said : oh! that is the traditional one- why don’t u look at it this way? – MOTHER TONGUE IS THE ONLY LANGUAGE THAT A PERSON LEARNS INFORMALLY, THROUGHOUT HIS LIFE, WITHOUT STARTING WITH SWEAR WORDS!

I cogitated on Coolz’ statement and i found wisdom in his definition.

Yes “INFORMALLY“, as,  a private tutor he ain’t gonna teach me the swear words first. But if one goes to a place where the language is unfamiliar, one runs the risk of hearing sounds which are aggressive and mostly those are swear words and they “stick” fast. And MOTHER is not gonna teach her child bad things to start with! But it is the streets, roads, garages and restaurants which introduce us to these swear words- and who has not been on road, before making it?

Since we all learnt the first sounds from our mothers, we as humans, had a good start; but somewhere in the course of our hectic living we have learnt all the swear words and now when i see asterisks (*) crawling one after another, in movie sub-titles, i know it is an attempt by the text writer,  to keep the vocabulary limited to our MOTHER TONGUE!

“MOTHER”! HOW MUCH WE RESPECT YOU.
